Manufacturing strategy - Dave Penny
says New Zealand needs to accept that it can't
compete with low cost, high volume manufacturers such as China. If our
manufacturing industry is to thrive, it must adopt other strategies.
(Dave Penny, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise?s sector director, July 2005)

A Smart Response is an Emphasis on
high-value manufacturing, where intellectual capital, smart technology,
operational agility and process flexibility are key assets. Also much
attention is being paid to continuous product innovation, more enlightened
value chain management, managing complexity and shortening the
product-to-market timescales. (Reg Harris, industry development consultant, June 006)

Sleepyhead has a capital expenditure of $2million for the 2007 year and is installing
technology including a computer system that enables all staff to log production and earn bonuses
above normal wages for productivity gains. Employee movements could also be recorded to identify
specific actions associated with jobs, which could then be re-engineered to save time. You can
measure the productivity, then work out how to get gains. These are the things New Zealand businesses
have got to do. (Craig Turner, MD of Sleepyhead, in the NZ Herald 1st September 2007)

Frankly, I believe policy
makers do not understand the importance of manufacturing on the New
Zealand economy. They don't understand the way it links into everything we
do. Without manufacturing even our biggest industries such as agriculture
and horticulture would be affected. Every piece of cheese or meat that
leaves New Zealand involves some aspect of packaging. If we had no
plastics industry what would happen to our cheese and meat? And without
the tooling industry we don't have a plastics and packaging industry. I'd
love it if someone did an economc benefit analysis of manufacturing on the
economy. I don't think anyone realy understands the real value of
manufacturing to our country. (Robin Martin, CEO, Plastic New Zealand, in
the -A vision for world leading New Zealand manufactures", November 2006)
In short, New Zealand's major exporters such as Fontera, ENZA and their agricultural and horticultural
producers would find it difficult without support from our smaller engineering, electronics and metal fabrication
manufacturers. These smaller manufacturers have produced some world-leading designs and products which in turn
have made exported sales. Fontera earns 25% of NZ's export revenues with the remainder including other manufacturers,
tourism, fisheries, fruit and the wine industry.
There is no doubt that
NZ manufactures are under considerable pressure, and that is the reason
that Software Applications has changed it's emphasise from software sales

We
specialized in creating a manufacturing software package that was fully
certified with the APICS. Over time howeve we began to see that the
portfolio of skills and experienced gained could be applied to
manufacturing business to better appreciate and manage their IT
systems.
Here below are the Top 10 most important reasons that
differentiates Software Applications from its competitors and why Software
Applications services are ideal for your company:
-
SAL has existed in the NZ
manufacturing market for over 25 years
-
SAL has developed an APICS
certified manufacturing software package. SAL use this as a sandbox to
explore and understand new and improved manufacturing models and
strategies.
-
SAL understands the key
issues in manufacturing that affect profitibality and cost
management
-
SAL understands
manufacturing software limitations, in particular why functionality
degrades with each new re-write using new IT
technology
-
SAL understands that there
is good and bad reasons for software customisation. There is a
difference and its important to understand the
distinction
-
Many MRP software vendors
pay lip service to full manufacturing capabilities. At best there
offerings are superficial. SAL can assist in overcoming these
limitations
-
SAL understands that many
businesses are risk-averse when they purchase software. Even though
these businesses consider the stability of the software vendor more
important than the functionality of their software, SAL can still assist
in these cases.
-
It is not uncommon for
some NZ agents of overseas manufacturing software vendors to only have
superficial expertise in manufacturing. SAL can help in overcoming
limitations in these situations
-
We understand that some software
can have an impressive
front-end look but lacks the essential back-end business rules logic.
It?s the back-end business rules that drive your business and without it you have major issues.
-
SAL can help you get the most out of your
existing manufacturing system
